Bahamas Observes World AIDS Day
The Bahamas joined nations around the world today in marking World AIDS Day to raise awareness of the deadly HIV virus that is still claiming the lives of so many people around the world. Many Bahamians were wearing the symbolic red ribbons to show their support for AIDS victims.
Last night saw an evening of glitz and glamour at the Bahamas AIDS Foundation's Red Ribbon Ball at Atlantis. The foundation received a $50,000 donation from Kerzner International, an amount that matched the $50,000 collected by the Foundation, for a total of $100,000.
Amidst the wining and dining, the serious issue of the evening was stopping the spread of AIDS in The Bahamas.
Dr. Perry Gomez, Director of the National AIDS Foundation, said that the rate of HIV infections have declined over the past five years.
There will be a Bahamas AIDS Walk on Saturday, December 6, 2003 starting at 6:00am.
The AIDS Foundation of The Bahamas invites all persons, organisations, churches and businesses to take part in this event.
