Another Olympic Medal for The Bahamas
Debbie Ferguson, one of The Bahamas' gold medal winning "Golden Girls", added another Olympic Medal to her collection last night as she won the Bronze for the women's 200 metre event in Athens, Greece.
Ferguson ran her season's best time of 22.330 seconds to win the Bronze, one-night after teammate Tonique Williams-Darling won the Gold medal for the 400 metre event.
"I am very thankful for the bronze medal. I think from watching Tonique yesterday, that really motivated me and the entire team," Debbie said afterwards. "I think per capita, Bahamas won the Olympics,'' she added.
The population of The Bahamas is only 350,000.
At 28, Ferguson was the oldest woman in the field. "I'm assuming I was the oldest young lady running,'' Ferguson said. "It's a new breed out there. I'm very proud. A bronze medal means a whole lot to me.''
Youth, Sports and Culture Minister, Neville Wisdom, was the first to congratulate Ms. Ferguson as she came off the track.
"I am so glad for The Bahamas. Everyone in the Bahamas is celebrating. It's just a wonderful performance and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving athlete."
Ferguson, the adorable sprinter who always seemed upbeat no matter the circumstances, has now secured a medal in the 200 metre event in just about every meet in which she has competed.
Stay tuned... there may be more Bahamas Olympics medals to come. ;-)
